We did ok at quiz tonight. It was just me, Ange and Reidun and we got in the top half of the pack. Sixth out of thirteen. We even got 6 for the sports round. We got at least six for every round after the first two (geography and space stuff). Even a couple of eights!
My most proud answer was to 'What sport has its best players of the latter era with the nicknames Super Mario and The Great One?'
None of us knew what the final communication from the Titanic was. The second to last one was SOS (Save Our Souls) but the last one was CQD. We had all kinds of good ideas.....
And I knew what TV character had the catch-phrase 'Trust me - I know what I'm doing'.

We blitzed the Wed quiz in Petone!
I'm sure if you had been there we would have got an even *higher* score. But we got first anyway.
And the ponderous puzzle was AA Milne. Easy!!
What does CQD mean?
come quick danger
We still think that SOS is a more dramatic message..... I woulda thought that'd be the last thing any ship would send... We were disappointed by CQD.
"Come quick danger" is informal.
The proper meaning is "CQ"-All stations (i.e. anyone listening), with "D" denoting an emergency (distress?).
SOS had been introduced a few years previously as a morse code distress signal, being easier to transmit and recognise than CQD. Wireless was only morse code at the time, there was no voice communication. "Save Our Souls" is an informal meaning. SOS doesn't have a formal meaning, it is just a simple code "--- ... ---" that is easy to use.
In the event, the Titanic transmitted both, so you weren't far wrong.
The last complete transmission recorded from the Titanic is "Engine room full up to boilers" about half an hour before the ship foundered. Anything after that was faint or garbled according to my sources.
Been interested in the Titanic since I was a wee person. :)
Ice Hockey
